Every business needs to have professional style letterhead stationery.

Printed on a standard 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper, your letterhead creates an impression to everyone who receives correspondence from you. Let's face facts, a well-designed letterhead on quality paper presents a professional image whereas the opposite is true if the letterhead is not stylish enough.

When designing your letterhead, start off by considering what your goal is.

How much information do you want to have contained in your letterhead.

Do you want to present a sophisticated image, a down-to-earth image or something in between? Keep your other marketing materials in mind as you design your letterhead.

Do you have a logo that you use everywhere else? Then perhaps you should include it in your letterhead.

Will your letterhead match the style of your envelopes?

Standard items that should always be included in a company's letterhead include:

* Company name

* Address physical and postal

* Telephone number (local and toll-free)

* Fax number

* Email address

* Website (if applicable)

After you determine the exact verbiage of the letterhead, then it is time to choose the design and color scheme. If your business cards are in green and purple, then choosing red and blue for your letterhead is probably not a wise choice. Keep in mind that certain symbols represent various groups, so unless you want the business to be associated with them, it's best to steer clear.

Another choice that you have to make is the font that will be used for your letterhead. Make sure that it is easily readable, but being creative with it can be acceptable, depending on the type of business that you're in. To enhance the professional image that your letterhead presents, don't forget to order envelopes to match.

Also, if your letters tend to be longer than one page, consider having second page letterhead designed as well. Having your letters continue on a second page that also has a letterhead, rather than on the back of the page or on a blank page, certainly looks more professional.

For this letterhead, you want to keep it simple, with just a company name and/or logo. As you can see, there are many things to consider, from the choice of paper to font to colors and more.
